Oversized Pittie With a Giant Heart Keeps Getting Overlooked for One Reason

When 2-year-old Ace arrived at Ventura County Animal Services, it wasn’t hard to see what set him apart — his size. Weighing in at a whopping 103 pounds, this gentle pit bull mix turned heads instantly.

But despite his sweet nature, his large frame may be the very thing keeping him from finding a forever home.

Ace had been staying with a family who took him in temporarily for a relative. After trying everything they could to rehome him, they eventually had no choice but to surrender him. Now, the shelter fears potential adopters will pass him up too — not because of his personality, but because of his sheer size.

“People might overlook Ace because he’s a 103-pound pit bull,” Jules Hooper of Ventura County Animal Services told The Dodo. “But he’s incredibly gentle, sweet, and calm. He just needs a chance.”

Ace is the epitome of a gentle giant. He gets along wonderfully with other dogs — especially smaller ones — and prefers laid-back hangouts and lots of affection over anything too energetic.

He’s still adjusting to shelter life, but he’s already showing signs of being the loyal, easygoing companion his previous family described.

“He’s curious, calm, and patient with all the changes,” Hooper said. “We think he’d thrive in a home with another relaxed dog and a yard where they can chill together.”

Because of his strength, Ace would do best with an adult who can confidently guide him on leash. But he’s already house-trained, crate-trained, and well-mannered inside — a true couch companion just waiting for the right lap to lean on.

Ventura County Animal Services is currently waiving adoption fees through January 8th due to overcrowding, and staff are especially hopeful someone will give Ace a chance before the weekend ends.
