When nature photographer Jan Allen set out one day to capture some wildlife shots, she was confident she’d come home with something special.
With her telephoto lens ready and the sun on her side, she spotted a Mississippi kite soaring gracefully through the sky — the perfect subject.
She lifted her camera, clicked a few quick shots, and smiled, certain that at least one would be frame-worthy. But when she scrolled through her photos, one image made her stop — and then burst out laughing.

“This was the only one that came out well-focused,” Allen told The Dodo.
Except, it didn’t exactly look like a bird.
Instead, the mysterious shape in her photo looked more like a stealth bomber, a giant bug, or maybe even a UFO slicing through the air.
“I thought, ‘Good photo of a stealth bomber,’” Allen joked.

Eventually, she did manage to capture a clear shot of the Mississippi kite — but it was the bizarre, unidentifiable “flying thing” that stole the show.
What began as a day of serious bird photography turned into a hilarious reminder that sometimes, nature — and timing — have a great sense of humor.
