Late one night in Minnesota, a young cat’s life was turned upside down. Just 1 year old, she was placed inside a carrier by her former owner and left alone on the sidewalk in front of an animal shelter.
Terrified and confused, the cat rolled and pushed against the carrier all night, desperate to escape. At one point, she even managed to shove herself into the road, where speeding cars rushed past her. Luckily, a kind passerby spotted the danger and quickly moved her back to safety near the shelter’s door.
When staff arrived the next morning, they were stunned to find the distressed kitty still waiting. But what surprised them most was the discovery that she wasn’t alone — she was pregnant and due to give birth in just a few weeks.
Against all odds, the cat was unharmed and seemed to know she was finally safe. She quickly warmed up to her rescuers, showering them with affection and trust. Inspired by her strength, the team at Ruff Start Rescue named her Ajita, a word meaning “invincible” and “unconquerable.”
“Ajita’s name means ‘invincible’ and ‘unconquerable,’ and that is exactly what this brave mama is,” the rescue shared on Facebook.
Ajita was soon placed in a foster home with Rachel, who was amazed at how instantly loving the young cat was.
“Ajita came out of the carrier and immediately was grateful and loving,” Rachel said. “I never would have guessed she had been through any kind of traumatic situation if I hadn’t seen the video myself.”
Rachel believes that if pet surrender was less stigmatized, fewer people would feel pressured to abandon their animals outside shelters. “Rescues would always rather have a pet brought inside — no matter the reason,” she explained.
Now, Ajita is waiting to welcome her kittens any day. Once her babies are old enough to be weaned, they’ll all be available for adoption. After that, Ajita will be spayed and ready to find a forever home of her own.
“This mama is a true survivor,” Ruff Start Rescue said. “With the love and support she’s receiving, she’s ready to start the next chapter of her life with a family who deserves her.”
