Puppy Abandoned in the Woods With His Belongings Waits Patiently for Rescue

Hank once had a family — until they left him alone in the woods. Alongside him sat a bed, a bag of unopened food he couldn’t access, some old toys, and a broken leg he had no way of healing.

It was a heartbreaking sight when a Good Samaritan stumbled upon Hank, sitting perfectly still on his dog bed, quietly enduring the pain.

At just 8 months old, Hank had already been through more than most dogs face in a lifetime. The kind stranger quickly contacted a local animal shelter for help.

“Only a puppy at 8 months old, yet he's endured so much,” Humans and Animals United wrote on Facebook.

“His tail started wagging the moment he realized he was being rescued. We cannot imagine why anyone would abandon him with a broken leg. But whoever you are, know this — Hank is safe now and will never be hurt again.”

At first, rescuers worried Hank might be aggressive after surviving alone for so long. But those fears were quickly put to rest. Hank greeted everyone with nothing but love.

“He was all love from the moment he was picked up,” said Rosa Fond, founder of Humans and Animals United. “Everyone who meets him says he’s the sweetest dog.”

A visit to the veterinarian confirmed the severity of Hank’s injuries — his leg had been broken for over two weeks. The pain explained why he hadn't left his bed.

Hank urgently needed major surgery, and without intervention, he faced the risk of euthanasia. Thankfully, Humans and Animals United stepped in to make sure he got the lifesaving care he deserved.

Before Hank could undergo surgery, he needed to regain his strength. Severely underweight, likely from being alone for weeks, Hank required careful feeding and lots of TLC from the veterinary staff.

As word of his story spread online, donations poured in, allowing him to get the treatment he needed.

Hank’s first surgery was a success, but his recovery journey isn't over yet. He remains very thin, with his ribs still showing. Caregivers are feeding him small, frequent meals to help him safely gain weight.

For now, Hank is in a temporary foster home but will soon move to a specialized foster environment to support his healing.

Once he’s healthy enough, he’ll be ready for adoption — and there's already a long line of people eager to welcome him into their homes.

“So thankful for the Good Samaritan who found him and everyone involved in his care,” the rescue wrote. “Hank’s future is bright — he’ll know nothing but love from now on.”
