Early last month, the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) received a troubling call: a litter of puppies had been dumped on the side of a local road. An ACS officer rushed to the scene, scanning the thick overgrowth along the street for any sign of them.
Before long, she noticed a weathered cardboard box tucked into the brush.

Peeking inside, she found five frightened puppies, curled tightly together. The officer gently gathered them up, loaded them into her vehicle and hurried them back to ACS for urgent care.

Despite their ordeal, rescuers were relieved by what they discovered.
“We were worried about the impact the heat had on them — August days typically run about 100 degrees in our community,” ACS public relations manager Lisa Norwood told The Dodo. “Thankfully, the puppies were just a little dehydrated and very hungry!”

With food, water and lots of attention, the puppies began to bounce back. One was adopted almost immediately, finding a loving home right away. The remaining four were transferred to the Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL), where each pup was placed with a dedicated foster family.
“Their future looks bright, and they’re getting a second chance at finding happy homes of their own,” Norwood said. “The ADL fosters are really giving them an opportunity to learn how to ‘dog.’”

Now, every one of these pups is safe, cared for and finally allowed to grow without fear.
“These puppies are safe, loved and growing strong,” Norwood said. “We’re thrilled they’ll never have to feel alone again.”
