On a bitterly cold January day in East Saint Louis, a security camera captured a heartbreaking sight: a brown and white pit bull pacing on a patio, crying softly as he scratched at the backdoor of a stranger’s home, pleading to be let in from the freezing weather.
Inside the house, two teenage girls heard his cries. They quickly opened their garage door, giving the desperate pup a place to warm up while they called for help.

The dog, later named Adobe, had been spotted wandering the neighborhood for several days. Despite wearing a harness and collar — signs that he once had a home — no one could catch him. He avoided people, scared and uncertain. Still, neighbors tried to help.
“He’d been posted on several local lost-and-found pet pages during the cold snap,” said Jill Henke, operations director at Gateway Pet Guardians. “One of our volunteers even set a humane trap in her yard after he showed up there a couple of times.”

But Adobe didn’t make it to the trap. Instead, he found the courage to seek out warmth himself — and stumbled across the perfect family willing to help.
Once rescued, Adobe was taken to Gateway Pet Guardians, where he was gently given space to decompress. The cold had taken a clear toll on him.
“He was visibly shaken — we could see how deeply the cold had affected him,” Henke said.
But even in his fragile state, Adobe quickly began showing his true personality. In just a few days, he became one of the shelter’s most beloved dogs.

“He’s incredibly sweet, though a little shy at first,” Henke said. “Once he warms up, he’s goofy, affectionate, and loves being near people.”
Adobe has also thrived in playgroups with other dogs at the shelter and has shown a special fondness for kids — perhaps a reminder of the teenage girls who first offered him kindness when he needed it most.

Now, Adobe is searching for a forever home or foster family where he can continue to blossom. He’d love a canine companion and would likely do well in a home with children.
What he needs most is love — and the assurance that he’ll never be left out in the cold again.
