Shelter Volunteers Stunned by Owner’s Excuse for Dog’s Severe Injuries

When Quinn was brought to Hounds in Pounds, shelter staff were prepared for a tough case—but nothing could have prepared them for the reality of her condition.

Her skin was inflamed and peeling. Open sores covered her body. Her face bore burns that looked chemical in nature. And her back leg? Fractured in not one, but two places—an injury that screamed long-term suffering, not a sudden accident.

But the most staggering part came next.

When asked what had happened, Quinn’s former owners gave a chillingly casual excuse:
“We just woke up and she was like this.”

A Lifetime of Neglect in One Small Body

The staff didn’t need a medical degree to recognize the truth. This wasn’t the result of one bad day—this was the outcome of prolonged neglect, perhaps even abuse.

Quinn, still a young dog, had somehow survived through unimaginable pain. And yet, when she arrived at the nonprofit shelter, her soft eyes still held a glimmer of hope.

Hounds in Pounds, with locations in New Jersey and Georgia, exists to save adoptable dogs from euthanasia and cruelty. Quinn’s case, they said, is one of the most heartbreaking they’ve ever seen.

But giving up? That was never an option.

Rescue in Action

Volunteers gently cleaned her wounds and treated her skin. Slowly, Quinn began to respond to the smallest signs of kindness—the warmth of a blanket, the gentle touch of a hand. Her breathing grew calmer. Her eyes grew softer.

Knowing she needed specialized medical attention, two dedicated volunteers, Abby and Geoff, drove more than three and a half hours to deliver her to one of the rescue’s veterinary partners.

There, Quinn began intensive treatment for her infections and inflammation. Once stable, she’ll undergo surgery to repair her shattered leg.

Now Safe — and Finally Seen

For perhaps the first time in her life, Quinn is safe. She’s being seen not as a burden, but as a soul worth fighting for. She’s receiving the medical care, emotional support, and love she’s always deserved.

Her journey is far from over. But this time, she’s not walking it alone.

If you want to help Quinn and dogs like her get the second chance they deserve, consider supporting Hounds in Pounds through donation, fostering, or spreading awareness.
