When two strays named Peanut Butter and Jelly were brought to Sonoma County Animal Services in July 2015, they immediately turned heads — but not for the usual reasons.
“Everyone was stunned,” said Emma Diemert, shelter supervisor at the time. “Even our most experienced staff had never seen anything like it.”

The source of their surprise? Both dogs had shiny gemstones glued to their foreheads.
No one could understand why someone would do such a thing. Sadly, it wasn’t just bizarre — it was harmful.
“Our vet removed the jewels herself,” Diemert said. “She found the glue had caused secondary burns on their skin.”

While the removal left behind scars, the dogs otherwise seemed healthy and resilient. Before long, a kind family adopted the bonded pair, and they spent several happy years together — until tragedy struck.
Their owner passed away, and with no one left to care for them, Peanut Butter and Jelly were returned to the shelter.

Now seniors, the duo once again needed a fresh start. Sonoma County Animal Services reached out to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, who quickly took the pair in and placed them in foster care with Lisa Arden.

“They’re total sweethearts,” Arden said. “They adore people, get along beautifully with other dogs, and still have tons of energy. Watching their personalities emerge has been a joy.”

Despite the scars from their past, Peanut Butter and Jelly have never lost their spark. They run, they play, and they love — just as they always have.
Peanut Butter and Jelly are very adaptable and would do well in a variety of homes, but would prefer to live in a home without young children. Otherwise, they just want to be loved.
“Peanut Butter and Jelly have SO much love to give and would make anyone who adopts them truly happy,” Arden said.
