The staff at Amelia County Animal Shelter (ACAS) in Virginia are no strangers to urgent calls about dogs in need.
But a recent message from a local Dollar General shopper stopped them in their tracks — and the photo that came with it spoke volumes.

Outside the store in Jetersville, a lone pit bull sat quietly by the glass door, peering in with eyes full of longing.
Her body bore scratches and signs of hardship, but her gaze was unmistakably clear: she was pleading for help.

Store patrons were moved by the sight. They offered her food and water and quickly contacted animal control.
When officers arrived, they realized this wasn’t just a stray dog — she was a mother.
A search of the nearby area led rescuers to her hidden litter of puppies, tucked away and clearly in need of care.

They gently gathered the entire little family and brought them to safety at ACAS.
There, the mama dog — now named Izzy — and her babies were given a warm welcome, a thorough vet check, and the care they desperately needed.
“Mom and the babies went to the vet today and got checked out, pedicures, and some meds to get all of them right on track,” ACAS shared. “Everyone is doing good and eating well.”

Izzy’s sweet nature quickly won over the staff. Though she had clearly been through a lot, her affectionate spirit shone through.
The team gave her breaks from mom duty to relax outside and soak up love, treats, and attention.
“She is so gentle taking treats,” one update read. “Izzy is such a love bug.”

As Izzy and her puppies continue to gain strength, they remain in the shelter’s care, safe and cherished. Adoption will come soon — but for now, they’re enjoying a soft landing after life on the streets.

As of now, Izzy and her babies are still at ACAS, working on getting stronger each day.
They’ll be placed for adoption as soon as they’re healthy enough. But for the time being, they’re soaking up all the love their friends at ACAS have to give.
And with every warm cuddle, the tiny family’s memory of living outside the dollar store continues to swiftly fade away.
To help dogs like Izzy and her puppies, you can donate to ACAS, or inquire about adoption when they’re ready for forever homes.
