In San Antonio, Texas, dog rescuer Jennifer McKee never ignores a call for help. So when she came across a Facebook post about an abandoned dog and her two puppies living in a local park, she didn’t hesitate — she grabbed her keys and rushed over.
What she found broke her heart.
Curled up together on a cold, rain-soaked blanket, the little family was clinging to each other for warmth. The mama dog and her pups looked exhausted and frail. McKee approached cautiously, not wanting to startle them — but it turned out, they were more than ready for kindness.
“They were sleeping, so I moved quietly,” McKee told The Dodo. “I didn’t speak, just offered the mama some turkey. She took it immediately — she was starving, licking the bowl like crazy.”
Without resistance, the mother dog and her puppies let McKee scoop them up and carry them to her car. It wasn’t clear how long they’d been out there, but one thing was obvious: they had been on their own for far too long.
“The mama was skin and bones,” McKee said. “Her fur and skin were in bad shape. But the puppies looked surprisingly healthy, considering the circumstances.”
McKee got the trio to a vet and brought them into her home to foster. After such a rough start to life, the little family was finally safe, warm, and loved.
With help from her TikTok followers, McKee named the mama Nova, and her two pups Peaches and Tank. Since their rescue, the trio has had a whirlwind of joyful firsts: they’ve been shopping, enjoyed pup cups, and even posed for pictures with Santa Claus.
“They’re being spoiled rotten,” McKee said, “exactly as they deserve.”
Now, McKee is focused on finding the perfect forever homes for Nova, Peaches, and Tank — families that will love them unconditionally and continue the second chance she started.
“These sweet babies won’t ever have to worry again,” she added.
