In the crowded streets of Mettupalayam, India, a heartbreaking figure quietly shuffled through the noise and chaos — a stray dog weighed down by an enormous tumor on his head, alone and nearly invisible in a city full of life. But that day, fate intervened.
The dog, later named Biggie, had a growth so large it nearly consumed his entire head. He couldn’t lift it. Locals had seen him wandering aimlessly, clearly struggling, his spirit fading under the weight of pain. Yet no one had stepped in — until a group of international veterinary heroes crossed his path.
Enter the team from Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS), a UK-based nonprofit with boots on the ground in India, working to treat the country’s most vulnerable animals. When they found Biggie, they knew immediately: this was one of the most severe cases they’d ever seen.

“We’d never seen anything like it,” said Dr. Shreya Bahl, part of the WVS India veterinary team.
Despite his shocking condition, Biggie greeted his rescuers with a wagging tail and a gentle spirit — a heartbreaking reminder that even in unimaginable pain, animals still crave love.
Veterinarians quickly administered pain relief and fluids before taking X-rays. Miraculously, the tumor hadn’t penetrated Biggie’s skull — a small but vital sign of hope. Within 48 hours, the 7-year-old dog was in surgery.

The tumor weighed over 2 kilograms (about 4.4 pounds) — more than 10% of Biggie’s body weight. It had wrapped around his skull in a way that made removal extremely delicate, but the team pulled it off.
“If he hadn’t been found, he wouldn’t have survived,” Dr. Bahl said.
After the life-saving surgery, Biggie underwent two additional reconstructive operations. Through it all, he remained loving, calm, and trusting — quickly becoming a staff favorite at the WVS center.

“He’s the star of the clinic,” Bahl said. “Everyone adores him. He’s got this calm, soulful energy that just draws people in.”

Now recovering at the WVS India center in Ooty, Biggie is thriving. He’s gaining strength, eating well, and — perhaps most importantly — finally able to lift his head and meet the eyes of the people who saved him.
He may not have a family yet, but he’s no longer alone. Surrounded by dedicated caretakers and visitors from around the world, Biggie is living proof that compassion — even from strangers — can change a life forever.

If you’ve ever wondered whether kindness makes a difference, just look at Biggie. His journey from forgotten stray to beloved survivor says it all.
