While driving through Lamar County, Mississippi earlier this month, Uber driver Kaytleen Roberson was in the middle of a routine ride — until something unusual caught her eye.
There, on the side of the road, was a small crate. Inside it sat a helpless puppy, alone and abandoned.
“I immediately felt sad,” Roberson told WDAM 7. “I just wanted to get [her] help.”
Without hesitation, Roberson and her passenger pulled over to check on the pup. The tiny dog looked up at them with wide, uncertain eyes, clearly confused and scared. Roberson snapped a photo and posted it to Facebook, hoping someone from a local rescue could step in.
That’s when Tamara Huff, director of Hub City Humane Society, saw the post — and her heart dropped.
“My heart absolutely broke,” Huff said. “I responded with, ‘That baby can come to Hub City.’”
And so she did.
The shelter named her Rocky Road, a fitting name for a pup who’d clearly had a rough start. At first, she was terrified — trembling in her kennel and cowering from staff members who only wanted to help.
“Initially, Rocky Road was very fearful and untrusting,” Huff recalled.
But with time, patience, and plenty of treats, something beautiful began to happen. Rocky Road started to come out of her shell. A tentative tail wag turned into full-on play. Cowering turned into cuddles.
“She is such a character!” Huff said. “She’s animated, expressive, and full of love. Now, she loves her toys, laps, and just being around people.”
Rocky Road is still waiting to meet her forever family, but no one at the shelter doubts that it’s just around the corner.
“Her future looks bright and happy!” Huff shared.
