20-Year-Old Augie Becomes Oldest Golden Retriever In The World

The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States, and for good reason. Just take one look at their adorable faces and its easy to see why these gorgeous, sweet-natured dogs make wonderful additions to any family.

August, better known as “Augie,” made the history books recently after celebrating a record-breaking birthday. Not only has she reached almost double the average life expectancy of her breed, but according to GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue, she’s the oldest Golden Retriever in the world!

Most Golden Retrievers only live to be 10 to 12 years old. Some have lived beyond that, reaching the ripe old age of 17 or 18, and even a few have reached 19, but Augie is the first known Golden to reach the big two-oh.

GoldHeart Golden Retrievers Rescue has been kind enough to share Augie’s wonderful story with the world and they have even gone into detail about how you can give your Golden a long and happy life.

Augie lives in Oakland, Tennessee, with her owners Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt. She has lived with several different families throughout her life.

While staying at the rescue center, she was adopted and rehomed twice. Augie is an amazing dog, but through no fault of her own, she kept being returned.

This is when Jennifer and Steve stepped in and adopted Augie again at 14 years old. They became her true forever family.

14 years old is old for any dog breed, but Augie was quite fairly healthy when she was adopted for the final time.

She was unfortunately diagnosed with kidney issues not long after,  but she has since been eating a mix of wet and dry food and taking some supplements to help mitigate the issue.

To celebrate her milestone birthday, Jennifer and Steve threw a little birthday party for her. They set up some amazing birthday decorations and gave Augie a dog-friendly carrot cake.

She also got some quality time with her fellow golden retriever siblings, Sherman, Belle, and Bruce — it was the pawfect day for any pooch.

And even at 20 years old, Augie is surprisingly healthy, her owner Jennifer said;

“She can still move around well (although she’s a bit shaky when she first gets up) and enjoys daily walks around the yard.”

20 years old is nearly twice Augie’s expected lifespan, and she’s still going strong. She’s lucky to have finally found a family that cares about her so much.

We don’t always get a lot of time with our loving dogs, so we need to make the most of it and ensure that they stay as healthy as possible.

Happy Birthday, Augie!
