Chihuahua Saved Man’s Life After Divorce— So, He Devoted His Life To Saving Other Little Dogs

When a woman broke Bobby Humphreys’ heart, a tiny dog was there to mend it. But Humphreys wasn’t always a little dog guy. In fact, the very muscular Humphreys had always been a big dog guy.

The idea of adopting a Chihuahua never even crossed his mind.

But that all changed when his marriage of 17 years ended. He found himself in the depths of despair and had even contemplated suicide. Thankfully, his friend Connie was there to get him through the tough times.

“I got weak. I wanted to end it. One person above all, Connie, kept me on this planet. True friend that was always there. In fact, she wouldn’t leave me alone long enough to do what I wanted to do. She literally just wouldn’t go away no matter how much I told her to. She had lost friends to that before and wasn’t going to lose me,” he said. “My friend, Connie, had shown me what friendship really meant. No matter what I needed, she was there for me. Needless to say, I feel I owe to her quite a bit.”

So, when Connie was moving and asked Humphreys to look after her Chihuahua Lady until she could bring her back home, he had no choice but to say “yes.”

But Humphreys wasn’t too thrilled about it. He had met Lady before and she, well, let’s just say she didn’t have the best reputation.

She was not really a fan of people. She was also “a little off.”

She had eaten Connie’s son’s chemotherapy medication and somehow survived. However, she wasn’t really the same after that.

But Humphreys agreed to look after Lady nonetheless. When he came home he found Lady sitting in her kennel quietly. Humphreys felt bad and decided to risk getting bit and let her out.

A little while later she was watching TV in his lap.

“[Connie] swore she’s never seen anything like this, this dog hates everybody. Lady and I have been literally inseparable ever since,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys was struggling with depression and had trouble getting out of bed some days, but Lady was the one thing that made him happy.

“I cannot believe how this little 7-pound beautiful baby stole my heart,” he said.

Since Humphreys would eventually move back in with Connie, he decided that he wanted to find a doggie of his own.

That’s how he found Kira. And she was every bit as unruly as he thought Lady was going to be. She tried to bite Humphreys’ handoff and barked and growled at him when they first met. But Bobby still decided he would take the time to train and discipline Kira so that she could be adopted.

He then set out to find another dog but ended up with two inbred pups after learning about how these pups are improperly bred for money and end up with lots of health problems. From there getting dogs became an addiction.

That’s how Big Guy, Littles World Sanctuary was born. He rescues dogs who’ve had a rough go at life or are in poor health.

“We rescue Chihuahuas who are living horrible lives, abused, starving, disabled, mental issues, etc. We give them either a furever home with us where they will never have to experience neglect or anything like that again, or we nurse them back to health and adopt them out! We just want to help as many babies as we can,” he explained.

Humphreys mostly funds the rescue himself but he says finances won’t stop him from providing care to needy dogs.

He has had about 40 dogs at a time and some of them have found forever homes.
