You’ve probably heard the term “junkyard dog” before, but it’s difficult to accept that there really are dogs out there living in piles of trash, scraping to get by.
The two dogs in this video were living in a landfill when someone reported the abandoned animals to the Hope For Paws rescue organization. These heroes save dozens of dogs a year, but these two were particularly difficult, as they almost never had human contact in their entire lives. Tired of barely surviving on old garbage, Millie (the light-colored dog) gave into the rescuers first.
It’s incredible that a dog who trusted only her best friend, Shadow, saw the kindness in her rescuers. Shadow, on the other hand, was very frightened and didn’t come out of hiding for a long time. It was only when Millie let Shadow know it was okay and their rescuers were not going to hurt them, that Shadow gave in.
Both dogs needed to build up their health, but over time, they went from living in trash to loving homes. After this video was posted to YouTube, both dogs were adopted by forever families, but to this day they see each other and remain best friends.
Their success story is rare, but there are plenty of dogs around the world who need our help.
