Her Cardboard Box Is Crumbling, Her Blanket Is Filthy And It’s Time For A Home

We cannot fathom what it’s like to be a dog living on the streets, fending for herself. For one dog, curling up in a cardboard box in a doorway was her best option. The elements can certainly be cruel.

A tourist visiting Romania spotted the helpless angel and contacted Howl Of A Dog, knowing the rescue group was world renowned for all its efforts. The woman continued to spot the dog near the resort town she was staying in.

When the rescuers came to see the stray, locals said that she had been living on the streets like that for years. What a heartbreaking realization!

What kind of life was she living? How hard had it been for her? She just lay there in a broken down cardboard box with her head on a dirty blanket.

They name her Helen.

Oddly enough, the rescue group explains in the video, Helen was one of the lucky ones. The locals liked her and would feed her scraps as they walked by. Other strays aren’t so lucky.

Upon further inspection, they realized Helen was a senior dog. The streets aren’t kind to anyone, especially older dogs.

As they say in the video, Helen and other dogs like her are forced to face the cold winters, rainy days, and storms. And are deprived of any medical care.

But… Life for Helen was quickly about to change!

The rescuers place the lead around Helen’s neck. She seems so gentle. Maybe she understands they are there to help her and change the course of her life. As they say:

This sweet dog waited her whole life for this moment.

They lead Helen away from her makeshift home. As they do, they give her the sweetest pat on the head. Her eyes have so much warmth in them. As if she’s saying, “That feels so good!”

Then it is into the car they go! They then drive two hours to the rescue center. Helen behaves the whole way there.

At the clinic, they notice Helen was tagged as part of the trap-neuter/spay-release program the country had until 2013. That means she had been living on the streets for at least 6 years. They happily cut off her tag.

Next, it’s time to run blood tests on Helen. One came back positive for a tick-borne illness. That’s ok, Helen. They’ve got medicine for you!

Now it’s time for Helen to receive her first real meal. She even gets bottled water to go with it, in a beautiful AND clean dog dish. She went from getting scraps on the dirty concrete to this in just a day. Amazing.

Helen is also given a brand new bed and pillow. Then the former street pup gets a much-needed bath! The dirt washes away just as her old life leaves forever.

After all that, Helen certainly needs a nap. She places her head in her rescuer’s lap. She’s so content. Finally, she’s safe and can drift off to a peaceful sleep with no street noise. And no worries.

Helen’s favorite thing to do is to go for walks. She is so gentle, never pulls, and loves to wag her tail. She also loves car rides. This is one happy, grateful dog!
