Hiker Climbs Mount Olympus With 120-Pound Dog On Scorching Day, Dog Collapses

Some outdoor activities should never be attempted with a dog if the temperatures are high.

For some unknown reason, a man decided to hike Mount Olympus in Utah on a hot day with his 120-pound yellow Labrador Retriever.

Sadly the duo got as far as the summit when Leo the dog showed signs of overheating. He laid down, would not move, and his owner knew his pooch was in danger.

Leo’s owner used up all the water he had to try and cool Leo off before summoning Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SLCOSAR).

Thank goodness rescuers were able to reach the duo as the dog’s life was in danger.

On their Facebook page, SLCOSAR wrote, “With the afternoon temperatures nearing 100 degrees on the west-facing mountain, having little to no shade, and heavy packs it took the SAR members some extra time to get up to the saddle.”

It took over six hours for everyone to get safely down the mountain, at which point Leo was rushed to the vet.

According to a Facebook update the following day, Leo’s kidney values showed signs of improvement and he was overcoming heat exhaustion.

Authorities remind people that dogs do not regulate heat as well as humans do.

“If you’re going to hike with your doggy leave early, or wait a few more months until it cools off,” they reminded everyone.
