Study Proves Dogs Sleeping In Bed Helps Chronic Pain Sufferers

Is it dangerous for dogs to sleep with us? Every now and again this debate rears its canine head, but now science is barking back. A team of researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada is reporting that people with chronic long-term pain actually find relief when a dog sleeps in bed with them.

According to researcher Cary Brown of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine in an article for Folio, he says, “Typically, people who have pain also have a lot of sleep problems, so usually if they ask their health-care provider about a pet, they’re told to get the pet out of the bedroom. But that standard advice can actually be damaging.”

The study showed that people with chronic pain felt good about having their dog with them and they felt less anxious and even more relaxed. The researcher also says the study revealed folks with chronic health issues felt less lonely sharing space with their pets. Since dogs tend to wake people up at the same time every day, it also helps establish a regular sleep schedule.
