5 ways to tell that your dog really does love you

Yes, dogs are considered “man’s best friend” but how do we know when we are making them happy? How do we know when we are fulfilling their needs and that they LOVE us like we love them?

Here are 5 telltale signs that your dog is totally in love with you:

1. Tail Wags

Tail wagging is a sign of happiness. It can at times mean other things, but mostly your dog, when he wags his tail loosely, means he’s very happy. Generally, tail wagging is a sign of content and excitement. If your dog is looking right at you and wagging his tail, it’s because you are the cause of his happiness. And it’s definitely one of the ways he says, “I love you.”

2. Your Little Shadow

Dogs will follow their humans for several reasons. Dogs are pack animals and understand that you are their pack leader. They also understand that you are their food source and the reason they have a place to live. But it goes beyond that. A dog that follows you from room to room is saying, in her own way, that she wants to be with you. She is also saying that she is very interested in what you are up to. She can also be showing signs of protectiveness, making sure you are okay. While following you around can get annoying at times, especially when you have to go from room to room to do chores, BE PATIENT and remember that your dog is most certainly saying “I love you.”

3. Jumping On You

While we often train our dogs NOT to exhibit this behavior, we cannot deny what this behavior does convey. Dogs often jump on their owners after coming home from a long day of work or when they get super excited and you’re the cause of their excitement. While it’s best to train your dog to show this in another way, it still means “I love you.”

4. Playing With You

Dogs are simple creatures. Maybe that’s why they’re so easy to love. Playtime is essential and when your dog makes you a part of his play ritual, he is saying “I love you.” Even when he jumps on you and is a little rough, he is expressing the desire to interact with you in the same way he would another dog. He loves that you are a member of his pack and he’s saying “I love you.”

5. Sleeping With You

Dogs are pack animals. They naturally want to maintain a close proximity to the beings most important to them. Just like wolves and other canids who sleep huddled together, they instinctively want to feel warm and safe in order to let their guard down and fall asleep. You make him feel warm and safe and being beside you is where he is happiest. Sleeping with you is his way of saying “I love you.”

Your dog smothers you with kisses, brings you his favorite toy, and give you his paw on command. The list is endless. You will know that your dog loves you— probably because dogs are the most loving creatures on the planet!
