Grieving Dog Can’t Stop Staring at the Photo of the Grandmother She Lost

Greka is a gentle pit bull living in Mexico with her devoted owner, Delvia González.

Like many dogs, Greka thrives on love, play, and the comfort of those around her — but one bond stood above all others.

Though Greka has always been friendly to everyone she meets, her heart truly belonged to one person: González’s 70-year-old mother, also named Delvia.

Each day, while González went to work, she would leave Greka in the care of her mom. What started as a simple arrangement quickly blossomed into something much deeper. Greka and Grandma Delvia became inseparable companions.

“They kept each other company and always spent time together,” González told The Dodo. “They played fetch until they were tired, and then they’d settle in to watch TV together.”

But their connection wasn’t just about fun. Greka was there for Delvia in her most vulnerable moments.

“My mother had diabetes, and her vision had become severely impaired,” González explained. “Greka became a source of support. If my mother’s glucose levels dropped or she started to feel unwell, Greka would alert me. And she never left her side — always laying at her feet no matter where she was.”

Greka stood by her beloved grandmother through everything — even the final chapter.

A few weeks ago, Delvia was hospitalized. Greka was the first one in the emergency room, frantic with worry. Sadly, Delvia passed away shortly after.

Wanting Greka to understand what had happened, the family brought her to the funeral. She was gently led to the coffin to say goodbye.

“She cried and trembled with sadness,” González said. “But I believe she understood that her grandmother was now resting in peace.”

Delvia may have been gone, but she left behind a powerful presence — one that Greka continues to feel every day.

Back at home, González placed a framed photo of her mother as a tribute. Greka sits beside it often, unable to take her eyes off the image. Sometimes, she brings her favorite ball and sets it down in front of the photo — waiting, as if hoping her grandmother might toss it back.

“She’s been very sad,” González said. “She brings her the ball and waits.”

In comforting Greka, González finds healing of her own.

“Whenever I hug Greka or when she brings me her ball, I feel like my mother is still here with us,” she said. “Their love has kept us strong through this incredibly hard time.”

Recently, during a visit to the beach, González and Greka experienced what felt like a quiet sign — a reminder that Delvia’s love is still with them.

Because just as the love we give our dogs can last beyond a lifetime, so too can the love they carry for us. In Greka’s loyal eyes, it’s clear that bond endures.

“They had something truly special,” González said.
