Bernese Mountain Dogs: Pros and cons

If you don't like hair in your house (and we don't care about that) don't get a Bernese Mountain Dog. Other than that, it's all pros. They are wonderful dogs, but they belong indoors with the family.

– Kim

Pros-the love they give you. Cons- none

– Cheryl

Pro they are sweethearts Con the hair matting if you don't brush them often enough

– Haley

Pros: affectionate, lap dog, loves family. Cons: tentative and fearful of stangers.

– Alicia

The pros are that they are the most lovable dog you will ever have. They love attention and to play and go for walks. They love people and are great with children. The cons would be that they don't have a long life span and the breed has many health problems.

– Veronica

They are the most caring dog and they are kind to everyone. The only down side is how much they shed!!

– Sue

Pros = loveable, zen, happy dogs. Cons = they shed a lot, but you get used to it. The pros are too strong.

– Caroline

Cons: hair, everywhere Pros: too many to list them all here…loveable, affectionate, aloof, intuitive, sweetest disposition I've ever experienced in a dog…one doesn't simply own a Berner, you become consumed by them, amazing animals!

– Shari

Pros- lovable, comforting, happy Cons- separation anxiety, cancer,

– Denice

Pros- Docile, calm, great with kids, loyal, loving, affectionate, friendly Cons- Expensive, prone to some health issues (ours tore his MCL twice)

– Ashley

Pro: a true family member, very loyal and people pleasing. Con: a huge amount of shedding.

– Laurie

Pros: excellent family dog Cons: requires frequent grooming

– Libby

Pros-great companion and very affectionate, like being with the family Cons-size and shedding

– Melanie

Pros: **a soft natured breed that is very faithful and loving. **Likes to be with family. **Learns easily. **A beautiful breed. Cons: **sheds a lot. **Sometimes wary of strangers, which is their nature. **A large dog but is mostly quiet in the house.

– CAROL

Pros: The sweetest dog I've ever owned. She never seems to grow out of the “puppy” stage. Lots & lots & lots of energy. Always over the moon to see me when I come in the door. Cons: Shedding, never ending shedding. A tail that feels like getting hit with a baseball bat when it she's nearby- that would be a “Pro” if it wasn't so painful.

– Don

The hair and the high rate of cancer

– Kate

Pros: They're great companions and fabulous family pets. Love being with their family and just want to please. Cons: They don't do well when left alone for long periods of time. They can have health issues and a short life span.

– Liz

Pros: Great with kids, good temperment, loyal, loves to be with you. Cons: They can sometimes think they're lap dogs and don't always know their own size when playing. Shedding. Health history. We currently own our 3rd Berner who is a little over 1 yrs old. Our first lived to be 12! But our second just lived a couple months past his 7th Birthday due to cancer. We still wouldn't change a thing.

– Brian

Most Loving and Loyal Dogs. Hates car rides and grooming

– Kim

Pros- most kind, affectionate and loyal companion. Relatively obedient. Cons- lots of health issues, sensitive stomachs, hip problems. You need to be ready to have a great veterinarian to help you ensure your dog is healthy and can maximize their shorter life span.
