When 14-year-old Shey was surrendered to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in late 2017, his world turned upside down. His family was moving and decided not to take him along.
At the shelter, staff quickly learned Shey needed help — he was deaf, partially blind, and suffering from severe dental disease. After surgery, only one tooth remained. Despite his sweet nature, months passed without anyone showing interest.

Then one evening, a boy named Tristan walked through the doors with his mom, searching for a small dog who loved to cuddle. The staff instantly thought of Shey.
“Shey is super sweet and wants to be near people all the time,” said Jessica Jorgenson, digital content coordinator for the rescue.

The moment Shey was placed in Tristan’s lap, his face lit up with joy. Shey relaxed instantly, as if he knew he’d finally found his person.

As staff explained Shey’s special needs, Tristan listened closely. He moved gently, understanding that Shey couldn’t hear and struggled to see. He even pulled out his phone, carefully marking down future vet appointments so he wouldn’t forget.

“He was so mindful of Shey’s needs,” Jorgenson said. “Tristan is very mature for his age and asked a ton of questions.”
He told the staff about the cozy spot he had already prepared in his room just for Shey. His thoughtfulness made it clear — this senior pup was going home.

Now, Shey spends his days exactly how he always wanted: curled up in Tristan’s arms, surrounded by love.
“Shey is very content,” Jorgenson shared. “Cuddling is his favorite thing in the world, and he snuggled right in with Tristan.”

After months of waiting, Shey finally has a boy who sees past his age and limitations — and only sees a best friend.
