Dog abandoned by owner outside airport has now found a new home

Earlier this month, the sad story of a dog named Allie went viral: her owner abandoned her tied up outside an airport, leaving her searching for a new home.

But thankfully, that story now has a happy ending ❤️

On December 29, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa reported that the 1-year-old dog was found tied up outside Des Moines International Airport.

The dog’s owner had reportedly tried to board a flight with the dog but did not have a kennel. The owner then left the airport with the dog, returned alone, and boarded their flight. Allie was later found outside the airport.

The dog was then taken in by Animal Rescue League of Iowa, who reported that despite everything Allie was a sweet dog in good spirits.

“(She’s) very friendly and loved everybody from the airport staff that came out, brought her a blanket, stayed with her, loved her, giving her all the attention until our animal services officers came out and picked her up,” ARL CEO Tom Colvin told Today. “She’s very sweet.”

At the time they said that Allie would receive veterinary care and be spayed and microchipped, and then be put up for adoption, hopefully to find a better and more loving home.

And thankfully, that day has finally come: in an inspiring update, Allie has been adopted!

Animal Rescue League of Iowa shared the news on Facebook yesterday, adding that her new owner actually saw her at the airport the day she was abandoned.

The owner reached out and said that Allie was “settling in very well” in her new home. The rescue shared photos of Allie saying goodbye to the ARL staff, and it’s clear she’s very happy to be going to a new home:

Allie’s former owner is reportedly 24-year-old Bigsen Charles, who defended leaving his dog behind, saying he did it to make his flight to New Jersey.

“I already checked in and didn’t want to miss my flight,” he told Daily Mail. “I thought if I paid for the dog on the plane they would give her a kennel. I didn’t know I had to bring my own.”

Charles claimed that he wanted someone to pick up the dog, but could not make arrangements: “I knew someone would end up taking her,” he said.

He later surrendered the dog to ARL. Today reported that a warrant was issued, though it’s not yet clear if he will face charges.

But the important thing is that Allie has found a great new home — we hope she will be very happy for now on!

Congratulations on your new home, Allie! Please share this inspiring news! ❤️
