Man Drives 70 Mph While His Dog Balances On Truck Bed, Trying Not To Fly Off

The Humane Society of Utah received a video from a witness of a dog balancing in the back of a flatbed truck on a Utah highway.

In the video, you’ll see a dog balancing, unrestrained, on the bed, while the truck is driving more than 70 miles-per-hour on I-15.

“The video just makes your heart stop,” Deann Shepherd with Humane Society of Utah, told Fox 13.

Although the video is hard to watch, the Humane Society decided to post it on their Facebook in the hopes of starting conversation and change revolving this issue.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that they’ve seen this happen. They’ve received countless calls and emails in the past regarding dogs who were seen struggling to stand in the back of a truck.

According to Arizona Humane, at least 100-thousand dogs die in accidents each year due to riding in a truck bed.

Despite this horrifying statistic, it is still not illegal, and now the Humane Society of Utah is fighting even harder to have a law passed.

As of right now, the only way an owner can face charges in the state of Utah is if the animal dies or is harmed in an accident while unrestrained.

So the owner will only be punished after the fact, when it’s too late.

The Humane Society says they’ve received dogs who have fallen or jumped out of truck beds and broke their legs. Oftentimes, owners end up surrendering their dogs to them because they can’t afford medical bills.

They will continue to fight to create legislation that will prevent truck bed associated dangers. If you’d like to learn more on how you can get involved or how to reach out to lawmakers, please contact advocacy@utahhumane.org.
