Sad news is being reported out of Columbus, Ohio. A dog from a foster program with the rescue group, Joseph’s Legacy, was partnered with an approved inmate at the Warren Correctional Institution. The dog, a sweet mixed breed named Evie, was recently found dead in the inmate’s cell. Workers at the rescue group are describing this as their worst nightmare.

On the Joseph’s Legacy Facebook page, an even more tragic update has been revealed. A representative from Joseph’s Legacy wrote, “We received an update from the necropsy that is absolutely heartbreaking. Our Evie died from blunt force trauma to her abdomen causing her liver to hemorrhage and her kidney was also damaged. We’re all undeniably angered and overwhelmingly upset.”

A spokesperson for the Ohio prison system reveals they have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to animal abuse. Although the dog died in late August, news of the death was revealed once the necropsy results came in.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and Warren Correctional both plan to review animal programs at other prisons.
Evie was a very sweet dog that entered the rescue back in 2015 with a broken hip after a car hit her. She was nursing puppies at the time and never wavered as being a wonderful dog mom. She was a wonderful dog who was receiving training in the program. She was adopted out but returned at no fault of her own.

Formal charges will be pressed. Joseph’s Legacy has placed 20 dogs with the prison system in the last year. Since the incident, all of their dogs have been pulled out.
