The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning to dog owners after dozens of people were reported sick just days after buying new puppies.
So far, CDC is looking into 30 reported cases of people infected with “Campylobacter jejuni”, a bacterium which is multi-drug resistant.

Among the various cases observed in 13 states, researchers have linked more than half of them to “Petland”, an Ohio-based pet store chain with 131 outlets across the country.
Kids and the elderly are more susceptible to this infection because of their weak immune systems. So far, 4 people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported.
CDC dealt with a similar outbreak back in 2016-2018, which left over 100 people across 17 states severely sick. Early symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.
The infected puppies usually appear lethargic and have no appetite. Authorities have asked people to get their newly-bought puppies checked with the vet for a health roundup.

One of the best ways to prevent contracting this illness is to wash your hands thoroughly after touching your puppy/dog, and not letting a dog lick your mouth or open wounds.
People should also maintain similar hygiene while handling their dog’s food or cleaning up after them. Stay safe and spread the word.
