Man Thinks Drunk Driver Killed Both His Dogs Til He Sees Izzy Running Toward Him

Please don’t ever drink and drive. In addition to putting yourself in danger, you risk hurting or killing both people and animals. Dog-Dad Chance Patterson knows all too well about the harm that drunk drivers can inflict.

Patterson started driving home from his double-shift, and the next thing he remembers is asking about his dogs. Sadly, while driving home, Patterson was hit head-on by a drunk driver in East Vail, Colorado. His dogs, Carlitos the German Shepherd and Izzy the Pit Bull were passengers in the car.

Carlos was found lying near the crushed vehicle, and Izzy the Pit Bull went missing.

Patterson was cut from his vehicle, taken to the hospital, and he received immediate treatment for his injuries. He was alive, but dealing with a busted leg, ribs, and elbow and a lacerated lung.

As soon as the community learned of the missing dog, they began to search.

Holly Walthers, who owns Vail Doggie Day Spa & Lodging sent an employee who knew Izzy well out to look at the site of the crash. She hoped the dog may be in that area.

Amazingly, Izzy was there and walked right up to the employee, wagging her tail, happy to see a kind person. Holly called Patterson at the hospital, where he was speechless but incredibly happy.

In response to the drunk driver who hit him, Patterson told reporters, “I just want her to know I’m not mad. She’s alive, I’m alive, and that’s all that matters.” He does hope people will think twice before driving drunk.

“I don’t know how I was able to come through it,” he told TODAY. “Izzy barely had a scratch on her.”
