Homeless Mama Dog Gave Birth On The Streets & Protected Her Puppies At All Costs

Hope For Paws received a call from Tracey Smith regarding a homeless mama dog who had recently given birth to a litter of puppies in a nursery by the freeway.

Two HFP volunteers quickly arrived at the nursery to search for the mom because they had to make sure they secured her before approaching her puppies.

When they finally spotted the mom, they tried to coax her near them with food, but she was too nervous. They knew their best bet to catch her was to use a humane trap.

Luckily, it worked, and they were finally able to catch her. Once they secured her, they tried to gain her trust with food.

They decided to name her Haleakala after the Hawaiian volcano in Maui.

Haleakala was still very nervous, so rescuers figured that seeing her babies would help her realize that they were there to help.

They collected all of the puppies and placed them on a blanket next to the mama’s cage. Then they went back to make sure there were no more puppies left behind.

When they went to look, they ended up saving a western lizard that was stuck in a planter!

Rescuers then brought Haleakala and her six puppies back to their clinic, where they fed them and gave them much-needed baths.

Haleakala was so relieved to finally be safe and warm with all of her babies. Rescuers named the puppies: Leilani, Molokai, Kalani, Koa, Luana, and Kaiko.

Haleakala was once afraid of humans, but now she is super friendly and trusting of everyone she meets!

And luckily, this story has a very happy ending. Haleakala and all of her puppies have since found loving forever homes!
