Homeless man rescues orphaned litter of puppies from storm, leaves them at shelter with moving letter

It’s always inspiring to see people go out of their way to look out for animals in need. Even people who have little in the world can still have a selfless compassion for animals.

Like one homeless man, who recently came to the rescue of a litter of orphaned puppies caught in a storm.

The Fayetteville Animal Protection Society, in North Carolina, recently shared the sweet story they called a “Glimmer of Hope in the Storm,” after a recent storm that swept through their area.

According to a Facebook post, the shelter found a litter of puppies left on their doorstep — along with a note that “tore at our heartstrings.”

The letter was written by an anonymous homeless man, who said that the puppies were the offspring of a local stray dog he had cared for, who had sadly died after being struck by a car.

After discovering the now-orphaned pups, he knew he had to get them to safety.

I knew from feeding her that she had puppies somewhere and after searching where I would usually see her I found them,” he explained. “I’m sorry for leaving them like this but I myself am homeless and cannot afford to care for them.”

My heart shatters for them and their mother. I just want them to be given the chance their mother like myself, was never given. Please do not think poorly of me but it felt wrong leaving them alone in the cold waiting on a mother that would not be coming home.

The shelter staff were deeply moved by the letter and the homeless man’s sweet compassion towards the puppies. They addressed him in their Facebook post and assured him that he did the right thing and the pups would be okay.

“To this compassionate individual, wherever you are, we want you to know that your act of kindness has not gone unnoticed,” Fayetteville Animal Protection Society wrote. “Your empathy in the face of adversity gives us hope and inspiration. We promise to honor your selfless gesture by providing these puppies with the love and care they deserve.”

They also invited the man to come by the shelter and thank the puppies in person, and people have offered to help him out, however it does not seem like the good samaritan has come forward.

The shelter wrote that the puppies are receiving vaccinations, deworming and microchipping, and that they will be spayed and neutered.

The pups — three boys and two girls — are estimated to be 7-8 weeks old, and are in good health, indicating that their late mother did a good job caring for them. They are still too young to be put up for adoption, but will hopefully all find homes soon enough. “They are so lively and just want to be loved,” shelter staff members say.

Thank you to this kindhearted man for saving these orphaned puppies and getting them to safety!

Please share this heartwarming story!
