There are lots of extraordinary births on the internet.
When Princess the horse gave birth to her foal at the University of Minnesota’s Leatherdale Equine Center, her caretakers were overjoyed. They hadn’t even known she was pregnant! But then things took a scary turn: not only was Princess expecting, but she was carrying twins.
Having to carry two babies at the same time puts an tremendous strain on her body, and the twins in uterus have to share their nutrients if they are both to survive. In fact, fewer than one percent of twin horse births have been successful. Thankfully, with the attention and care of this mare’s handlers, both babies have survived and are living well and happy.
