Instead Of Chasing Them Away, This Coffee Shop Opens Its Doors To Stray Dogs Each Night

In Greece, there is a growing epidemic of homeless animals. The once fair economy has changed tremendously, causing a ripple effect across the entire country. One cafe, in Lesbos, is inspiring many by opening their hearts AND their doors to dogs in need.

Hott Spott isn’t just a great place to grab a cup of coffee and a delicious pastry. It is also an evening safe haven for local strays. Every night, as the cafe closes its doors to patrons, it opens its doors to homeless dogs that need a safe place to sleep for the night.

The cafe is lined with cushioned benches, the perfect place for these pups to rest their tired little heads. The “pet motel” began the tradition in July of 2015 and has no plans on putting the pups back on the street.

A photo, that has circulated social media thousands of times, is a heartwarming reminder of what being truly helpful (and HUMAN!) looks like.

This show of kindness isn’t uncommon in the region. With such a large number of stray dogs and not enough permanent homes, these pups are loved and cared for by many.

“Here in Greece our homes are not large enough for all of us to house animals,” Bill McMillian told Life With Dogs. “That’s why we look after the street dogs. We feed them, pet them, and play with them. They are like our own pets, but they belong to everyone instead.”

Learn more about the Greek cafe and what they are doing to help the stray dog population in the video below!
