Animal rescuers in rural Alabama sadly see abandoned dogs far too often. But when a rescue volunteer named Summer noticed a lonely dog sitting in a Dollar Tree parking lot, she immediately knew something was wrong.
What started as a quick stop to buy milk quickly turned into a rescue mission.
Summer asked the store employees if they knew anything about the dog. They told her he had been sitting there all day after someone drove into the parking lot, let him out of the car, and left without him. The heartbroken pup, later named Samson, refused to leave the spot where he last saw his owner, patiently waiting and hoping they would come back.
Summer tried to approach him, but Samson was frightened and unsure of everyone around him.
“He was clearly scared and confused,” Merrill Fortier of Shultz’s Guest House shared. “You could tell he still believed the person he trusted was coming back for him.”
Unable to stop thinking about the abandoned dog, Summer returned the next morning to check on him. Samson was gone from the parking lot, but after driving a short distance down the road, she spotted him sitting outside the town’s only gas station.
This time, with a little patience and a trail of hot dogs, Summer finally earned his trust.
After rescuing Samson, she took him to the veterinarian, where they discovered he was actually in decent health overall. He was slightly underweight and dealing with fleas, but otherwise doing well. What rescuers initially feared was a medical issue with his nose turned out to be an old injury that simply gave him a unique appearance.
Summer welcomed Samson into her home as a foster dog, and over the following weeks, his personality completely transformed.
Slowly, the nervous and defeated dog began to feel safe again.
“He rediscovered his goofy and affectionate side,” Fortier explained. “He loved hiking with his foster family, going on car rides, curling up beside them, and joining in on everyday adventures. It became obvious that Samson desperately wanted love and connection.”
When Samson eventually transferred to Shultz’s Guest House in Massachusetts to search for a permanent home, he didn’t have to wait long. Just five days later, he was adopted by a loving family.
Now, Samson is thriving in his new life. He has a dog sister named Lucy, plenty of adventures, and a family that truly adores him.
Not long ago, Samson sat alone in a parking lot believing he’d been forgotten forever. Today, he finally has the happy ending he was waiting for.
