In August 2016, Josh Pettit woke up to this scene in his hometown just outside of Baton Rouge. Heavy rains had flooded the area, displacing thousands of residents. Josh, determined to help his displaced neighbors, immediately set out in his boat.
It wasn’t long before he spotted a bush shaking… and a pair of eyes. When he got closer, he realized he was staring into the face of a very sad, very waterlogged pup who was struggling to hold on to her life.
Josh was able to pull the dog to safety on his boat. Once inside, she laid on his lap and “moaned like a big baby.” Her name was Sadie.
In a stroke of good luck (and serendipity), the very next person Josh rescued from the flood happened to be a veterinarian who agreed to take Sadie in until her owner could be located.
While Sadie was, indeed, later reunited with her family, thousands of animals were displaced by the disaster. Visit the Louisiana Flood Animals’s Facebook page to see what you can do to help.
