Man thought his dog died in the rapids – 10 days later, she comes running

Back in 2016, in the vast wilderness of Canada, a lively Golden Retriever/Collie mix named Kali embarked on an extraordinary adventure that would test her strength and resilience.

Kali’s tale began when she and her owners, Dave Kareken and Joy Neilyset, went out for a hike along a scenic river.

The whole group reveled in the beauty of nature as they trekked through the forest, unaware of the challenges that awaited them…

This particular day, the usually gentle and serene river had transformed into a raging torrent due to heavy rainfall in the area.

As fate would have it, Kali, driven by her natural curiosity, found herself drawn closer to the fast-moving water. And when the dog missed a jump and fell to a ledge about ten feet below, things turned into a nightmare.

In a moment of confusion, Kali jumped into the rapid water, trying to swim her way to safety. Sadly, the 7-year-old dog was swept away by the powerful rapids, leaving her helpless owners devastated.

“We called and searched for hours trying to find her but there was no sign of her,” Dave Kareken told USA Today.

After much contemplation, the family was faced with the heartbreaking choice to go on with the hike, without their cherished family member.

Dave Kareken and Neily had to return to their residence in Asheville, N.C., while their son went to a camp in Minnesota.

“We lost a member of our family,” Dave Kareken said. ”I’d never felt anything like it.”

For the next ten days, Kali’s survival instinct kicked in as she battled against the unforgiving elements. The forest became her temporary home, providing her shelter and sustenance. Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, Kali’s owners were wracked with worry.

But shortly after Kareken returned home, he received an unforeseen and surprising phone call. Kareken’s heart skipped a beat as he listened to the unexpected news: Kali, against all odds, had been discovered alive. Despite the treacherous waters that had threatened her life, she had persevered in the unforgiving Canadian forest for a remarkable ten days before miraculously appearing at a nearby campsite.

David drove 20 hours straight to reunite with his dog. With each passing mile, Kareken envisioned the moment of their reunion, where he could wrap his arms around his faithful companion once more.

“To find out she’s alive, I collapsed,” Kareken said. “I just fell to my knees in disbelief and prayer and thanks.”

Thankfully, one of David’s friends captured the heartwarming reunion on video:

Kali’s incredible survival and the unwavering dedication of her owner serve as a reminder that the bond between a human and their loyal companion can withstand the most challenging of circumstances.
