Returning back to civilian life from being in service in the military can be difficult even for the strongest of men and women. Far too often our veterans come home and have trouble adjusting because of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The extreme stress and events witnessed in battle make their way back into civilian life and manifest in nightmares or flashbacks, anxiety, or depression.
One Marine had been having a difficult time adjusting for almost three years after coming back home to Tallahassee, Florida. 26-year-old Peter Coukoulis was battling daily, with the effects of PTSD, while his family sadly watched him suffer. This Christmas, his mother Dena came up with a brilliant surprise present that she hoped would bring her son some joy — a cute, little puppy!
Coukolis’ mother gathered his family a few weeks before Christmas to give him a surprise he’ll never forget. The Marine had a look that he knew what was inside when he saw the box with a big red bow.
When he opened the box and saw the tiny Beagle inside he couldn’t hold back his tears.
The puppy brought him so much joy and his family’s hopes for something that would help his depression were answered.
“The puppy has already changed Peter’s life; it has made him happy after a very difficult three years,” Dena said.
