Pit Bull Puppy Left For Dead On Train Tracks, Survives To Carry Out Life Purpose

When Hudson, a pit bull puppy was three weeks old him and two of his sisters were abandoned.

As bad as that sounds already, his story only gets worse (before it finally gets better).

This young pup’s story starts with a total tragedy. Hudson and his two siblings were extremely dehydrated and malnourished, with their paws nailed to railroad tracks. Someone had left them for dead.

That is until some railroad workers came across the pups just in time to try to save their lives.

The trio was in such a terrible condition, all sustaining wounds to their paws. One was found without a paw, another one was found missing two middle toes, and the last puppy was found with a large hole through a paw. Unfortunately one of Hudson’s sisters did not make it through surgery and all of the intensive care provided to her.

The surviving puppies were taken to Mohawk Hudson Humane society where they started to recuperate. While there, Hudson underwent an emergency surgery that saved his life, at the cost of his paw.

Brad Shear, former executive director of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society says “It’s very clear that it’s a cruelty case. This is someone who intentionally did really serious harm to these puppies. Someone that can do that is a very scary person. To do this you have to be heartless.”

Shortly after being found, Hudson had hopes of regaining a somewhat normal life with ‘furever’ home.

Richard Nash, the man who adopted Hudson, started to notice that he was experiencing horrible nightmares and having a hard time trusting people.

That’s when he knew he had to do something and he helped Hudson get a prosthetic paw from Plastics Make It Possible.

The plastic paw looks similar to a brace or cast and looks hardly like a fake body part.

With the new paw, Hudson had a hard time getting out of bed at first. After a year of breaking in the paw, he started to jump on tables and act like a puppy.

Nash said, “Not many parents would be happy their dog jumped on the table, but he used his hind legs to get his front paws up on the table and that was a really amazing day. We were crying because we were so happy to see him do that.”

Now Hudson is trained to be a therapy dog with the help of Nash. Together they go to hospitals to visit patients and schools to encourage children.

In 2015, Hudson was awarded a ‘hero dog’ award at the Hero Dog Awards ceremony by the American Humane Association. He was chosen because of his efforts as a therapy dog and because of the amount of awareness he has brought to animal cruelty.

Nash says, “Just him being there (as a therapy dog) and seeing how happy he is and how well he can walk on his prosthetic and the things he can do even though he has a disability, I believe it gives people the confidence and courage to be able to say, ‘I can do it. If this little 65-pound dog can do it, I think I can do it.”
