Retiring Officer Told He Can’t Keep K-9 Partner But Once He Learns Dog’s Fate Refuses To Take No For An Answer

When Ohio police officer Matthew Hickey decided to retire after 34 years, he assumed his K-9 partner would be joining him. Unfortunately for him, this wasn’t going to be easy.

According to a state law, the animal was to be promptly auctioned off to the highest bidder. Despite having been his loyal partner for the past four years, he was told that there was nothing he could do about the animal’s fate.

“To me it’s like raising a child,” Hickey said. “You get bonded from the basic training. You watch his breathing, his tail movements.”

Apparently, he wasn’t the only one who felt this way. Even the town mayor was upset about this law, rallying behind the officer as he built up community support.

To determine Ajax’s value, an outside vendor was brought in and his worth was determined to be $3,500. Because this total exceeded $1,000 and Ajax was considered city property, the law stated that he would need to be sold at auction.

The community knew that they needed to bring this dog home, and what they did next quickly gained national attention.

Raising almost 70,000 dollars, it was clear no one wanted the officer retiring alone. But in a crazy twist of fate, this money wouldn’t be needed at all.

See the unbelievable way this story ends in the video below – I can’t believe what he did with all that money!
