Shelter dog left with a broken heart after being stood up by potential adopters

Every shelter dog wants nothing more than to find their forever home. They’re all just waiting for that amazing day when they finally get adopted and picked up by their new family.

But one poor dog’s excitement turned into heartbreak recently, after being stood up by potential adopters — but the shelter is still determined to find this long-waiting dog a home.

Hendrix, a 4-year-old Chinese Shar-Pei/Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix, is the Kentucky Humane Society’s longest resident. He was taken in last April and has waited for months to find a home, watching as countless other dogs get adopted out instead of him.

But KHS has been trying extra hard to find a home for this “incredibly smart, immensely loyal, adorably chubby” dog.

“He’s got the smile of a champion, the cuddling skills of a clingy parent who can’t believe their baby is graduating high school, the house-training abilities of an honor roll student who refuses to excuse themselves for a bathroom break during class, and most importantly – the boy has heart,” KHS wrote on Facebook.

“A big heart at that and he deserves for someone to love him the way we do.”

KHS thought they had finally found a home for Hendrix recently, and arranged for the interested adopters to meet Hendrix — only to be dealt another disappointment and setback.

Hendrix was eager to meet the new family, and “got all excited and dressed up.” But he was left heartbroken when the family didn’t even show up.

“Hendrix is sad,” KHS wrote. “Watching him wait excitedly for a family to come, only to be stood up, is devastating. We can’t stand seeing our sweet boy sad.”

They shared a heartbreaking photo of the dog, lying on the floor, looking so disappointed:

The photo touched the hearts of fans online, who wrote words of encouragement for the stood-up dog.

“Hang in there Hendrix,” one person wrote. “They just weren’t the right family for you. Your family will come.”

“Sounds like to me they don’t deserve you sweet boy!” another added. “The right family will come along.”

But rebounding from this heartbreaking incident, KHS is more determined than ever to find Hendrix just the right home.

Hendrix needs to be in a home without cats, and ideally would be in a home where he is the only pet. But surely there has to be a home out there somewhere for this sweet goofball.

“All of us at the Kentucky Humane Society love Hendrix so much and we just want him to have a great life with someone who will care about him as much as we do,” the humane society wrote.

We feel so sorry for Hendrix: after waiting so long, he got his hopes up only to be stood-up at the last minute. It’s clear they weren’t the family he deserves.

But hopefully someone will be moved by Hendrix’s sad story and decide to adopt him for real!

Let’s spread the word about this beautiful dog, share this story!
