Woman Spends 4 Days Crawling Through Storm Drains To Rescue Puppies

Callie Clemens couldn’t sleep knowing there was a litter of puppies trapped in the storm drains in Houston. The puppies were dumped in a neighborhood known as a dog dumping ground.

So when Clemens was texted that three puppies had fallen into the storm drain, she spent four rough days crawling through cockroach nests and the storm drains under the city streets looking for the lost pups.

“I can’t sleep knowing there are puppies in there going to die,” Clemens told KHOU 11. She and a group of volunteers knew no one would be coming to help the puppies so they set to work.

They began using dog sounds on their phones in the hopes of luring the puppies to them. Clemens also got maps of the sewer system.

Eventually, they successfully located a female puppy on the first night and a male puppy on the second night. The other puppy was still in the storm drain system but further away.

Clemens and the other volunteers intend to keep searching. She later appeared on Isiah Factor‘s TV show and told the TV host that one of the still-missing puppies appears to have exited the storm drain and has been spotted.

So the search continues. In the meantime, she said that Timmy, the male puppy that was rescued, is going into foster care thanks to Rescued Pets Movement.

Timmy had “been on the euthanasia list because of medical issues and lack of space at the shelter (not their fault) has been tagged and is safe,” says Clemens.

The female puppy is currently with the Houston SPCA. Here’s hoping Clemens and her fellow rescue volunteers find the one remaining lost puppy soon!
