Speedy Little Dog Crashes Track Meet & Tries To Beat Lead Runner To Finish Line

Tracks meets are a fun way for students to compete in a series of running and jumping events, but they usually don’t involve dogs.

Logan High School senior runner, Gracie Laney, had a furry encounter of the cutest kind recently at a track meet in Utah. Gracie was ahead of the pack and had the entire final stretch all to herself.

All she had to do is run steady and she would have no problem coming in first place for her team. A dog in the area, however,  had other plans for Gracie.

“I’d say probably about the 50-meters [mark], I could feel something coming on me, and I thought it was a person. I thought it was the runner,” Laney shared.

“And then I kind of realized that it was really small.” As she ran the second heat of the girls’ 4 x 200 relay event, suddenly, a small dog came speeding up behind her. Somehow, the pooch broke free from her owners and decided to try to catch Gracie.

Video footage shows the little dog named Holly, appear on a grassy area, run past two other participants, and catch up to Laney.

Amazingly, Holly not only went neck in neck with the speedy Laney, but she wound up passing her off and coming in first place!

“After watching the video, I thought, ‘Holy cow, that dog is so fast,’” Laney stated. “So I thought it was kind of funny [that] I got beat by a dog.”

Laney recalled hearing cheers from the crowd as the dog got closer and closer, but she thought it was typical applause from the audience. She had no idea fans were cheering Holly on as she caught up to her.

Although Laney never found out who owned Holly, she is happy the dog was reunited. She hopes perhaps to meet the dog someday and do a selfie together.
