Mama Dog Hides Her Baby To Protect Him From Scary Kill Shelter

If you think for one second that the love of a momma dog and her baby is any less real than that of a human’s, I invite you to meet Sadie and her pup, Benzy. Together they were abandoned at a kill shelter in Texas. Frightened and unsure of what was to come, they both sat in their cold cement cell quivering. A sight so sad that the staff took a video to share on social media in hopes they would get fostered before they were put down.

They were on death row. You can see the fear in their eyes as they trembled in their cell. Momma nervously tries to comfort baby Benzy who anxiously hides behind her. As dogs, they don’t understand everything, but they certainly sense that something very terrible is about to happen. And they’re right. Puppies and their moms get killed every day at kill shelters across the U.S.

The staff desperately wanted the bonded pair fostered. So they shared the agonizing video on social media. That’s when New York based rescue group, Rescue Dogs Rock, shared their video. But still, after over 1,500 shares, no one had stepped up to foster the two, and their future was looking grim.

Finally, a woman with a heart of gold nine hours away saw the video and was heartbroken. Dava Hammack, mom to four rescue dogs at home, knew these two needed help. She couldn’t believe no one had stepped up. So she knew it had to be her. Even though she was nine hours away with four dogs, she knew that the mother and daughter pair had a much better shot with her in foster care than in the kill shelter.

“I was like, ‘I’ll do what I have to do to help them. I’ll drive nine hours, whatever needs to be done,’” Hammack said. “And they were like, ‘Are you sure?’” –The Dodo

The two were transported to Dava in Fort Worth, Texas where they took a long and nervous drive home. It took them a little while to make the transition into their new foster home, but they are no longer quivering in fear of their lives. They are happy and getting lots of love all because of the compassion which Dava Hammack had in her heart to save this pair. Love really does make the world go round.
