When you hear the words “dog shelter”, your mind probably comes up with a lot of negative images.
It’s because most of the time, dog shelters aren’t the best place for dogs. Animals that end up there are often neglected.
Danielle Eden and her husband, Rob Sheinberg, thought that they’ve already seen the worst.

Traveling and visiting dog shelters most of their lives, they are used to seen barking dogs in really small cages. However, when they visited a dog shelter in Israel, their hearts broke.
The place was just a mess.

It was muddy and dirty. The dogs were not being fed properly. They were fighting over a few pieces of bread they were being fed. There were rats everywhere.
Plus, the dogs had tics and their needs were nowhere near met. Those things make things a lot harder for Danielle.

In her trips, she usually makes a list of about 10 to 20 dogs that she could bring back to her own rescue center, the Dog Tales sanctuary.

In picking out the dogs, she makes sure to consider really old and really sick dogs. Sometimes, she’d pick dogs that have been in the shelter for too long.
Generally, the process of picking the dogs isn’t that hard for her. But for this particular shelter, Danielle had a hard time choosing because of the dogs’ condition.
So, she decided to take them all.

Dog Tales has taken full responsibility for each dog.
In the first two months, it managed to relocate about 90 dogs within the country. Later on, the volunteers were able to relocate 25 dogs to their sanctuary in Ontario.
It didn’t take a long time before every dog was able to find a new and forever home.

That’s because a lot of people showed interest in adopting the dogs right away. It was a really big help in meeting Danielle’s goals.
The work to fix the shelter and care for the dogs, however, didn’t go easy for Danielle and her team.
She had to bring team members who can work full time to clean the area and make sure that there are no rats there.
She also needed team members who could care for the animals and make sure that they can eat properly.
Despite the odds, she succeeded. She was able to get the dogs a new home and they were surely more than happy about it.
They no longer have to fight over food or stay in tight cages. They won’t have to deal with rats anymore or feel neglected.
The dogs are able to enjoy playing in larger spaces and eat a healthier diet. The best part about it is that they finally have families that actually care for them.

We would like to take a moment to fill everyone in on an enormous project that we have taken on here at Dog Tales. The creation of our entire shelter was inspired by four incredible dogs that were rescued from the streets of Israel. In honour of this, our founders regularly travel to Israel to find dogs in need and bring them back to Canada for a second chance at a happy life. On our trips to Israel we visit local shelters and work with the staff and volunteers to make lists of 10-20 dogs at a time to bring to our rescue. On these trips we look for the difficult cases- dogs that are senior, dogs that have disabilities, and dogs that have been waiting for a home the longest. Making these lists is gut wrenching , however it is usually quite clear which dogs need our help the most.Earlier in the year we were taken to a shelter in Israel that we had never been to before. The conditions were shocking. To say that the shelter was overcrowded is an understatement, with more than 250 dogs crammed into a space with the capacity for 70. There were as many as 6 dogs in each cage, all fighting over the loaves of bread that they were being fed. Rats were everywhere, and the dogs, most of whom had been there for years, were terrified. For once, it was not obvious to us which dogs needed us the most. They all needed us. We realized that it would be impossible to make a list deciding which dogs would be rescued from this horrific life, and which would be left behind. We then made the decision to acquire the entire shelter, and take responsibility for all 250+ dogs. In the past two months, 90 have been relocated within Israel to more adequate shelters. 25 have already made the trip to Canada. 150 remain. We have assembled a team in Israel to clean up the shelter and make the dogs more comfortable until we have the space to bring them here. While in Israel veterinarians will be caring for the dogs to address any immediate health concerns. Staff will be working with the dogs every day to socialize them and teach them to trust again. The dogs will no longer be eating bread. To help these dogs, we need your help. Every dog that is adopted from our rescue creates space for another of these dogs to be brought to Canada.
