Woman went to pick her dog up from groomer — is told the dog is gone

A California woman is living every dog owner’s nightmare: after going to pick her pet up from a grooming appointment, she was told the dog wasn’t there after an unfortunate mix-up.

But a week after the dog went missing, there has been an inspiring update to the story…

On November 14, Aubree Booher, of Norwalk, California, dropped her pet dog Betty Lou for a salon appointment at a Petco in Lakewood, according to ABC 7. But what was supposed to be a routine grooming turned into a nightmare.

When Aubree returned to the salon, she was told that her dog wasn’t there. Someone else had come to pick up their dog, and an employee mistakenly brought out Betty Lou, mixing them up due to similar appearances.

But this small mix-up turned into a disaster when Betty Lou, apparently panicked at the sight of strangers taking her away, bolted out the door. “When my dog saw that it wasn’t me or my mom, I guess she got scared. She backed out of their leash and was able to get past everybody and ran out the store,” Aubree told ABC 7.

After that disheartening news, Aubree began a desperate search for her lost dog, but she was nowhere to be found. Aubree, who received Betty Lou as a 16th birthday present from her grandpa, was devastated.

“When you come to the realization that you’re actually going to go home without your dog, it makes it all the more real,” Aubree’s mother Cynthia Booher said.

Petco, after their accidental part in the dog’s disappearance, offered to help the search by providing a professional dog tracker and offering a $2,000 reward.

UPDATE: Betty Lou found

A week after Betty Lou went missing, there was an inspiring update to the story: Betty Lou was found alive.

According to KNX News, a Petco employee found the dog not far from where she escaped, hiding in a bush. “I just want to say that Betty is a survivor, and she did what she could to keep herself safe, keep herself warm,” Cynthia told the outlet. “She was inside of a bush to try to just surround herself so nobody sees her.”

The dog reportedly has a limp and a scrape on her belly, but the family is hoping for a speedy recovery and are relieved to have her home safe.

We can’t imagine the scare this family went through after learning their dog was gone, but we’re glad to hear that Betty Lou has been found!
