Officer sees abandoned toddler crying frantically, comforts him and holds him in his arms

A police officer says he was acting on human instinct when a photo of him and a child went viral on the Internet.

Officer James Hurst of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department was called to a hospital when someone reported that a 16-month-old toddler was found outside without any adult supervision.

Officer Hurst arrived on the scene, and he was touched by the sight. He vowed to stay by this toddler’s side. During the initial intake medical exam, the boy began to sob uncontrollably. Officer Hurst’s fatherly instincts immediately kicked in to gear, and he held and comforted the boy until he fell asleep.

The precious moment was caught on camera, and it’s gone viral on Facebook since being posted by the police department.

Officer Hurst, a father of two boys himself, tells KTLA, “I just knew this child needed somebody to be there for him. It was just human instinct; humanity. The hospital staff was taking great care of him [but] he was sobbing and crying. I picked him up and within minutes he was asleep on my chest.”

Soon, thousands of people chimed in with their praises and gratitude for the officer’s act of kindness. Many were incredibly touched by what Officer Hurst did. In days where things don’t seem to go well, it’s refreshing and heartwarming to hear stories of human beings going above and beyond for others.
