Animal activists are outraged over a leaked clip showing a K9 named Zuul allegedly being mistreated by his handler.
The video, originating from Salisbury, North Carolina, shows an officer hanging Zuul several feet up in the air in a leash chokehold.
Zuul was then slammed to the side of a police vehicle, violently shoved inside, and punched with force by the officer.

In the footage, Zuul seems utterly helpless out of loyalty as he silently takes in the rough treatment by the very human he is trained to trust the most.
What’s further disturbing is the conversation between the witnesses of this apparent abuse. They can be heard chuckling in the background, and seem relieved that no cameras are on and no witnesses are around – all hinting toward ill will.

The conduct of the handler is being heavily criticized by the public, with concerns being raised on the “acceptable” training methods for K9s. PETA has also joined in the protest by sending a letter condemning this action to the Salisbury Police Department.
Meanwhile, the Salisbury Police Department has claimed that Zuul is “happy and healthy” after a vet assessment, and is taking some time off.
They have launched an investigation into the matter, and the officer concerned has been put on administrative leave for the time being.

However, PETA officials are not satisfied with a mere internal disciplinary investigation. They are calling this a matter of “criminal conduct”, and have tagged it as a violation of a dog’s trust and welfare. They have also urged people to raise the issue of K9 safety on a national level.
