Top 25 Must See Movies for Dog Lovers

#1 – Marley & Me (2008)

We will start out with one of the tear jerkers! Marley & Me is about a dog named Marley that is just about as hard headed and stubborn as a tree!

It is based on a book called Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog. What’s it take to get the title of the world’s worst dog? If you take one look at Marley, you will see. He is a yellow Labrador retriever that was adopted by the Grogan family. He was always getting into trouble, but his family loved him nonetheless. Marley’s behavior is often forgiven because they understand that it is just within a dog’s nature to be so stubborn and silly.

If you haven’t ever seen it, you don’t want to miss out on this one. Have the Kleenex ready though, because this one will have you bawling by the time it is over.

#2 – Beethoven (1992)

Beethoven is another family favorite that we won’t forget about anytime soon.

It was a movie of the 90’s, but there have been several adaptations released since the original. Beethoven is a clumsy, hard to handle Saint Bernard with a heart of gold. Sure, he gets into mischief and always seems to find himself in the worst possible scenario, but ultimately he is loving and funny. This really reminds most people of their own dogs, who get into trouble often, but still have an outpouring of love and affection for their family. If you haven’t seen Beethoven, go ahead and watch it.

#3 – Old Yeller (1957)

If you are into the older classics, then Old Yeller is one that you won’t want to miss out on. Old Yeller is another story about a dog that likes to get into trouble. Do you notice a pattern here? Many movies that have dogs as the main character seem to be focused around their misbehavior and the fact that we grow to love them anyway. This movie will really make you open your eyes up to the unconditional love that a dog has to offer. When you watch this one, be warned that it is also a tearjerker!

In the end, the dog’s owner must put him down because he is infected with rabies. This is probably one of the hardest experiences that a pet owner will have to go through.

It shows that you really have to do what is best for your dog, even when it hurts too much to do it.

#4 – Lassie (1994, 2005)

Another great classic movie is Lassie. It is about a fun loving collie that started out homeless but found a family to love him unconditionally.

Lassie is one of those movies that has been readapted over the years, so if you don’t want to watch the older version, grab the new version from the 90’s and watch it! Lassie is so much more than just a story about a boy that loves his dog. It is a story about a dog with exceptional bravery, and you will notice that just shortly into the film. When the family leaves the city and goes out into the country to live, there are problems for everyone. A young boy named Matt really takes to Lassie, and he is able to learn a lot about life and loyalty from him.

#5 – My Dog Skip (2000)

My Dog Skip is another tale of friendship and loyalty.

It is set back in the 1940’s, with a shy boy growing up in a small Mississippi town. Skip is his dog that he loves very much. It is based on a book that was written by Willie Morris. This tale will take you through the effects of bullying with children and the hope that a dog can bring to a child’s life. When Skip becomes a part of Willie’s life, he goes on to gain confidence in himself and he is also able to make friends.
