Not all dogs enjoy pats on the head. It sounds crazy, I know, but if you just assume your dog likes pats on the head, you might miss out on distress signals. Dogs are individuals; they have unique tastes and attitudes. Some dogs love pats while others don’t. Others will simply tolerate them to please you.

Remember that patting is different than petting, dogs are usually more accepting of slow pets than quick pats. Some dogs don’t like pets or pats. A lot of it comes down to how they were raised, dogs grew up as strays or suffered from abuse while young tend to be more wary of physical contact.

It’s also worth remembering that just because a dog doesn’t want to be pet doesn’t mean that it doesn’t like you, it simply means that it shows affection in other ways. If your dog wants to be near you, it means it likes you, and you might have to accept that level of intimacy.
